Plain Paper Becomes an “Object” That Carries Meaning.

ただの紙が、想いをのせた「物」になる。

The photograph above shows a binding dummy. It is a sample bound to the actual specifications of the photobook so that the texture of the paper, the compatibility of the different papers used for the cover and pages, and the exact width of the spine can be checked. A complete world, the photobook, will eventually be placed within it, but unless the paper has considerable weight and thickness, a binding dummy looks like nothing more than a notebook. A photobook passes through many stages, from organizing the initial vision to editing, design, printing, binding, and distribution, with many people contributing along the way. When you hold the finished photobook beside its binding dummy, the words “an idea has become an object” come naturally. A photographic print can give the same feeling, but a photobook allows an entire world to inhabit a book. We want to share that fascination with our readers. With the cooperation of the author, Scott, and Yamada Photo Process Co., Ltd., our printing and binding partner, we would like to document the process.

上の写真は「束見本（つかみほん）」。紙の質感や、表紙とページで用いる紙の違いによるマッチングの確認、背表紙の実寸計測などを行うために、実際の写真集の仕様で製本作成するサンプルです。ここに”写真集”というひとつの世界が載るわけですが、束見本の状態では余程の斤量（紙の厚み）がない限り、単なるノートにしか見えません。写真集は、想いの整理から編集・デザイン・印刷・製本・配本と、数多くの行程を重ね、たくさんの人の手が入ります。そうしてできあがった写真集を束見本と共に手にすると、本当に「想いが物になる」なんて、思わず口をついて出てくるのです。写真プリントにもそんな実感はありますが、写真集となれば1つの世界が本に宿るのです。この面白さをぜひ読者の皆さんに伝えたい。著者であるScott氏と、印刷および製本でタッグを組ませていただいた株式会社山田写真製版のご協力を得て、レポートしたいと思います。

I want to gather the photographs I have taken into a single book.
More than seeing me in person, I want people to see me in this book.

撮りためた写真を一冊にまとめたい。
自分そのものよりも、この一冊に自分を見て欲しい。

My reason for wanting to make a photobook is just as I wrote in the final installment of The Wind from Seattle. When I was first invited to write the series, I had no idea whether I could do it. Somehow it reached fifty installments. At first there was the pleasure of working on pure enthusiasm, but before long, having to photograph within a set theme sometimes became a burden. Looking back over the five years of the series, a great deal happened. I am neither a professional photographer nor an essayist, but it was a valuable experience nonetheless. The series ended just as my wife and I celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary: fifty years and fifty installments. Our circumstances, including my work, changed countless times over those years, and I am grateful that my wife stayed beside someone as thoroughly captivated by his interests as I am. The two fifties came together. I wanted to bring the series to a close by making a photobook and giving it to my wife. For me, photography means pressing the shutter before I begin to think. When I consider it, photographs may be where my true self appears most clearly. Now that the photobook is complete, nothing would make me happier than for those who hold it to sense who I am through this volume. That was the idea, but I had no idea how to make it. So I asked the Photo Yodobashi editorial team for guidance. (Scott)

写真集を作ろうと考えたきっかけは、The wind from Seattleの最終回に記したとおり。当初連載のお話を頂いた際に、自分がそれをつとめられるか全くわかりませんでした。なんとか50回を数えるところまで来て、初期のパッションに任せた楽しさもあり、いつの間にかテーマに縛られて撮影することが重荷になったり。5年にわたる連載の中で、振り返ればいろいろとありました。プロフェッショナルな写真家でもなければ、エッセイストでもない自分ですが、ともかくよい経験になりました。折しも連載終了時に結婚50周年を迎え、連載も50回。これまで仕事を含めた環境が変化すること数知れず、よくぞこの興味の虜とも言うべき自分に妻も付き添ってきてくれたものだと感謝しています。ちょうど50と50。これまでの連載を総括して写真集を作り、妻にプレゼントできればと考えたのがきっかけ。そして自分にとっては考えるよりも先に、シャッターを切るのが写真。考えてみれば、自分というものが最も現れるのが写真なのかもしれない。写真集が出来上がり、この一冊を通じて手にされた方に私を感じてもらえれば、こんなに嬉しいことはありません。・・・そんなところなのですが、いざどう作ればよいのか皆目検討がつきません。そこでPY編集部に相談に乗っていただいたわけです。（Scott氏）

The Process of “Creating”

「創る」プロセス。

Making a photobook requires roughly the stages shown above. Some steps were unique to this project and will be explained later. Today, many online services let people make photobooks easily by placing photographs into fixed templates. We chose the opposite approach: a production process involving several people. The Photo Yodobashi editorial team handled the editing and design and served as the liaison with the printer. Beginning on the next page, we will describe the actual editorial work. We start with steps ① through ⑤, which we call the process of “organizing the vision.”

写真集を作り上げるには、ざっと上のような行程で作業を行う必要があります。今回のプロジェクト特有の行程もありますが、それはまた後に解説いたします。いまやWEBサービスなどで、定型フォーマットに写真を配置し気軽に写真集を作るサービスなどが多数存在します。今回はそれとは対極の、複数の人々が関わる制作プロセスとしました。フォトヨドバシ編集部で編集とデザインを行い、印刷会社への橋渡しもつとめます。さて、次のページから「編集の実態作業」をお伝えします。まずは①〜⑤の行程、題して「想いを整理する」行程です。
