The Wind from Seattle Vol. 15

The Leica Akademie workshop was held in a conference room at the Ace Hotel on 29th Street near Broadway in New York City. As one might expect of Leica's choice, it was a four-star hotel steeped in history yet exceptionally stylish, and known as a gathering place for artists and designers. Fifteen people attended the seminar, including one woman; some had come from as far as Switzerland and New Zealand. There was also one young man who appeared Japanese. Mr. I, who is based in Japan but often works in Boston and New York, greeted me on first meeting with, “You're Scott from Yodobashi, aren't you?” I was astonished, but in my nervous state it was a welcome moment to find someone with whom I could speak Japanese. We began with introductions, responding to questions from the three professional instructors: what photography meant to us, what genre we wanted to pursue and why, and what purpose had brought us to the seminar. That brought the first cold sweat. Each of us had submitted five photographs when applying, so the instructors already understood our skill and tastes and presumably wanted to learn everything else. Over three days, lectures used a blackboard and images projected on a screen lowered from the ceiling. We also went into the streets for guidance in snapshot work and evaluations of our photographs. Everyone used an M9 with either a 50mm or 35mm lens. Black paint had worn from the professionals' well-used cameras, and the exposed metal gleamed dully.

Simply watching the professionals and other photographers work, their posture and technique, brought many startling moments. Few photographed without the viewfinder as I routinely did. They wanted to secure the exact frame they intended to isolate, they explained, so they swiftly raised the camera and caught the subject through the finder. Without it, the rate of precisely composed pictures is certainly low. I had justified my method as a way of capturing a person naturally, without their noticing. The cold sweat came when I realized that this was really timidity: I had been fleeing a direct encounter with the subject.

Their motion in raising the camera and shooting was truly the rapid work of masters. The instant the camera came up, the shutter was already released. Unless someone was staring directly at them, they would probably go unnoticed. For this speed, they set the camera according to conditions at ISO 400–1600, aperture priority at f/8–16, obtaining as much depth of field as possible. With a special purpose or enough time, they might open the aperture and focus precisely. Even while walking together, they would quietly vanish and somehow be photographing an interesting moment down a side street. Their awareness, mobility, and power of attack were extraordinary. So this is a true street photographer, I thought, recalling my own lukewarm movements, and breaking into another cold sweat.

They often photographed amusing moments in ordinary life. At the scene itself I sometimes could not understand what they found interesting, yet when shown the photograph I would grin at its humor. Their photographic eye was different. Another cold sweat. It was a sensitivity capable of taking ordinary events from the constantly moving field of natural vision and sensing the story they would begin to tell once framed as a photograph. In an instant they also composed the image in their minds so its subject would be clear. They favored rare scenes as well, or occasions when rhythms of light and shadow appeared in subject, background, or both, giving the photograph depth and character.

The photograph's subject must be clear, and the flow of the context one wishes to assert must appear in the image. Not only snapshots of people but street scenes, they said, become compelling when they contain geometric patterns, simple or complex. I understand that horizontal, vertical, and diagonal forms, or arabesque ornament, can create a picture. Yet recognizing such figures before one's eyes amid a broad and changing field of view seems to require a finely sharpened photographic eye. Whatever the photograph, if the viewer cannot sense the intention felt by the photographer, it is merely an uninteresting picture.

They do not indiscriminately take large numbers of photographs. But when they meet a subject that feels decisive, they may make dozens in one place, changing angles and including each shifting instant. Another cold sweat: unable to make quick, firm judgments, I would photograph countless unnecessary scenes “just in case,” leaving myself unable to concentrate when the real moment came. Yet I know someone who reflexively takes hundreds of frames almost every day from every kind of street scene. His pictures carry the air of the city and the scent of people's daily lives. Reaching that point establishes the practice as a photographic genre of its own. What matters is not remaining halfway.

Speed is central to the street snapshot, and there is often no time to isolate a perfect composition. Retouching during development is therefore essential to completing the work. If empty space weakens the subject's voice, crop it decisively and refine the image. At times, adjust the contrast of light and shadow to draw out the full story and depth of expression, and correct focus when necessary.

For them, the raw value prized in an untouched news photograph has no importance. They respect the story told by the completed photographic image, shaped by the photographer's sensibility, and its excellence as art. The aim is a comprehensive effort to express one's photograph to the fullest. A photographer therefore needs not only to shoot, but also the sensitivity and skill to edit. The same presumably applies to printing.

Their belief in the freedom to use any means necessary to complete a work from a scene that moved me felt wonderfully fresh and opened my mind. I had recently begun using Lightroom to edit raw files, moving next to Photoshop Elements for processing and editing when fine adjustment was needed. Learning it all looks difficult. Yet how marvelous if it can give a photograph I made new life as a more vivid work. Many people, on the other hand, prefer untouched images straight from the camera. Such work can demonstrate excellent photographic technique through the many camera and lens settings chosen for the circumstances, as well as through composition, and I find that marvelous too. Under varied conditions it is difficult to make a finished work straight from the camera, so such photographs greatly interest me. That field deserves its own pleasure. I am delighted by the occasional lucky frame requiring no retouching, and intend to keep pursuing the challenge.

On the final afternoon, the professionals visited us one by one and commented while viewing our downloaded photographs on our computer screens. Asked to submit our favorite frame, I chose “Woman Waiting for Coffee.” I found its lines interesting and, despite an apparent imbalance, sensed a center of gravity descending vertically through its middle. Each selected work was projected large on the screen. The professional's assessment was that although mine did not work through light and shadow, the left elbow on the counter, the arm and fingers against the waist, and the languid weight of the upper body created a story. That gravity falls straight down, stabilizing the picture despite the diagonal angle, while suggesting the energy of the next movement. The woman's atmosphere somehow evokes an earlier era, and the mystery of whether the person making coffee is a woman or a young man adds interest. He said it would be better still had I moved farther around and emphasized her backside. I replied that this snapshot angle represented the full extent of my courage. Everyone else's work was individual, and several photographs made me exclaim, “Amazing!” I even wondered whether some participants were professionals in disguise. Listening to the professionals' comments and the resulting discussion, and hearing them explain their own photographs, made for an exceptionally rewarding conclusion.

Receiving guidance in something one loves from people accomplished in the field is truly joyful. I had never studied “photography” at all, but simply gathered things I had seen and heard and worked as I pleased in my own way. This experience came as a fresh shock. Whether photographing streets or nature, the pictures I favor contain a story, the theme of this seminar. I was trembling with the realization that beyond the level at which I had worked lay another world: photography as serious art. I want to try a new approach to snapshots and new methods of editing, and to make more impressive pictures incorporating the art and design I learned, perhaps stepping into that new world. Even if I never reach it, the joy of knowing it exists is already beyond measure. Thank you, Leica Akademie!

Thank you, Leica Akademie!
