The three days at the Leica Akademie workshop brought an enormous reward: I discovered the goal I should pursue. Perhaps that sounds grand after only a few days of study. Yet the exhilaration of recognizing what I personally want to aim for was like the moment, perhaps in middle school, when I first became aware of attraction to women. One day in a school corridor, a younger student passed me and suddenly stole my heart so completely I nearly fainted. It was the moment I discovered the sensation called first love.
Whether it is first love or the discovery of a photographic goal, I want always to keep my antenna open to receive this kind of pounding excitement. The body frays with age, but the heart can remain as fresh as one wishes throughout life, retaining the joy of stimulation. As we pass through experience after experience, the heart may develop calluses and cease to be greatly disturbed by things. Apart from that accustomed part, however, I want to keep the sensor capable of delicate response polished, shining, and innocent.
Even now at seventy, I would be glad if my heart were often shaken as violently as it was by childhood's first love, my awareness soaring with the excitement of discovering a vast unknown realm. Surely life is more interesting when there is so much to feel. And so I intend to keep this grand photographic ambition quietly burning within my chest.
Drawn by the soft, sweet fragrance of cappuccino, I glanced into a café. The instant a cyclist resting over what looked like a map and two people conversing happily entered my view, my feelings dissolved into this unremarkable everyday scene. There I saw a splendid Sunday afternoon, and without reasoning I wanted to release the shutter. I never want to lose the sensory element that can receive an impression I love when it resonates like this, and I wanted the camera's sensor to feel it just as keenly.
Human beings can control the expressions created by changes of feeling, so it is difficult to read the truth within the heart from outside. The result is the proverbial poker face. Some can hide emotion behind a blank expression and some cannot. Whatever the face, I am satisfied if I can photograph the instant when true feeling suddenly appears. The heart revealed without artifice is entirely natural and produces an intimate image.
Depending on the subject's mood, being told that such an expression looks natural and good may itself be offensive. But please forgive me; this is a discussion of photographs. Unless a person is a wax figure, the face has a hundred forms directly connected to the heart, and I want to photograph that variety.
After returning from New York and overcoming influenza, I was ready to set out when I noticed strange lines in images from my main camera, the M9-P. In the end I sent it to Leica for repair. The imaging element has probably failed and the CCD sensor board will need replacement. It may be another week or ten days before it returns.
About fifteen years ago, a severe subdural hematoma required my skull to be opened and my brain sensor repaired. I thought there was no need for even my soldier to imitate its commander. The camera body, like mine, has continued bravely despite its scars, but I am delighted that its most important, heart-like part, the CCD sensor, will return refreshed. At the end of this month I hope to make an overnight trip east to the open country around the Columbia River. Unless my car also returns from repair, the route will be difficult in my wife's sedan, so I hope camera and car both come home by then.
Everyone has a favorite place that suits them. For me, it is this bench. Sitting here, I faintly hear the enjoyable bustle of the market, the exchanges between vendors and customers. There is reassurance in feeling neither too conspicuous nor isolated. As I listen to a slightly salty breeze from the bay pass by, time marking itself slowly feels pleasant. Today a heavily bearded gentleman was peacefully immersed in the atmosphere. I did not sit beside him, not wishing to break it.
Even when I walk around determined to make a good photograph, finding a subject of the kind discussed at the workshop is truly difficult. I try not to overthink this thing called art, but simply photograph subjects that send me signals. Still, the question of what and how to photograph remains in my mind. I hope that awareness will begin to appear, however slightly, in the resulting images.
This time I tried a new challenge with the M8, using a 90mm medium telephoto lens to make snapshots centered on facial expressions. At this angle of view, composing reliably without the finder is nearly impossible. Yet raising the camera is difficult too. Even with distance preset by eye, looking in at the decisive instant, placing the subject, and releasing the shutter without shake proved demanding. Depending on the situation I also used a 35mm lens for interesting scenes, but while I checked the list in my head of requirements for a “good photograph,” the moment escaped. In the end, as before, I continued shooting quickly, simply receiving the stimulus from each subject.
After the workshop, perhaps too much knowledge had entered my head. For a while I could find no subjects that seemed photographically worthy of my camera, in short, I had nothing left to shoot. Just as I was becoming troubled, Eiko, a friend who had helped me in New York, woke me with these words: “If you keep shooting intuitively as before, what the workshop put into you should appear in your photographs. Later, look at the images and use the eyes you developed there to select the ones you like. Isn't that enough?” I am gradually returning to my former self.
Long ago, when I had begun golf and could hit the ball a little, I bought numerous instruction books and studied every aspect of the swing. My head grew swollen with how-to knowledge and my scores fell apart. I gave all the books to my rival, as though offering salt to the enemy, and first returned to an empty mind. My score improved. Remembering it made me grin. The good-natured fellow gratefully read the books, his swing disintegrated, and I did not lose to him for several years afterward.
