The Wind from Seattle Vol. 14

The Wind from Seattle Vol. 14

This time the work consists mainly of snapshots of people. Apart from a few frames, these are candid photographs taken before the subjects knew, sometimes without the viewfinder. People's everyday faces and gestures are truly beautiful. I never point a camera at anyone with malice or an improper purpose, but strictly speaking the act may infringe privacy rights. After capturing the natural atmosphere, I therefore try whenever possible to show the photograph to the person and obtain consent. Some express displeasure; then I apologize sincerely and delete the data. Asking permission first would make it impossible to preserve the instant that touched my heart, producing a photograph with an entirely different purpose, so I often shoot without warning. First, take the photograph. Yet because this means entering another person's domain, I believe no one should make snapshots without accepting social responsibility for the act.

A snapshot seeks to isolate one frame from that scene and instant, so I use as fast a shutter speed as possible. At the same time, because there is little time to focus, I want a smaller aperture and broader depth of field. Raising ISO resolves the conflict between these requirements and correct exposure, but only within limits, because image quality deteriorates. Another option is to use as wide a lens as possible to increase depth of field. Yet composing the intended subject as the main element then requires moving very close, making candid work difficult. Here lies the technical challenge for those of us who aspire to be snapshot shooters.

This time I used 50mm and 90mm lenses and opened the aperture, blurring the background to express the main subject as strongly as possible. The shutter speeds suited snapshots and produced little camera shake, but zone focus set at two, three, or five meters proved extremely unforgiving. Accurately judging the distance to a subject by eye is a skill I must develop.

To avoid missing the moment, I generally worked without the viewfinder. Results were severe and the success rate was not high. An error in estimated distance left the subject softly focused; rushing the camera toward someone who seemed about to notice me kept the camera moving at the instant of exposure and blurred the frame; sometimes the principal figure was absent from the picture entirely, never mind the composition. Yet I enjoyed more than enough of the peculiar thrill of candid photography, and felt genuine delight when I caught an image just as I had sensed it. When a target I want to show prominently is five meters or farther away, I can begin bringing the camera toward it before I approach, preparing to release the shutter at the preset distance.

I cannot say I am satisfied with every photograph shown here. Still, when I selected recent work fit to publish, the result, including snapshots of birds and flowers, became a collection on the theme of “faces” and “forms.” I am especially interested in snapshots of people and enjoy the exhilaration of feeling adrenaline race through every blood vessel. Photographing birds or flowers, by contrast, gives me a soft, tranquil feeling, as though I had taken a tranquilizer.

The “passing shot,” my own term for a snapshot of someone passing, is fascinating. At the instant I cross paths with a person approaching from ahead, I continue walking and release the shutter without the viewfinder, looking away from the target while pointing only the camera. Timing and direction are difficult, so the success rate is low, but a person in motion is utterly natural: the sweet spot of snapshot photography. The hard part is turning around immediately afterward and chasing the person so I can show them the photograph.

When I photographed this man wandering along, one of his companions apparently saw me and cut into the frame. I stepped back and released the shutter again. As the weather grows warmer, many young people living in a free style emerge into the city and show us their way of life.

After photographing living things almost exclusively, even inanimate objects begin to seem as though they have faces and atmospheres. Looking around with such eyes, everything appears ready to move, and I feel as though I inhabit a world of stories. I will return to that subject another time. For now, I hope everyone viewing these photographs can sense at least a little of “that place and that moment” flowing through each snapshot.
