Nature's radiance in each of the four seasons has its own character and beauty. Autumn in Seattle marks the beginning of the rainy season, so clear, dry days are few. Perhaps a passing shower settles the dust suspended in the air, because on the occasional brilliantly clear day, crystalline light penetrates the space with startling clarity. A crisp landscape appears, as though a film had been wiped from one's eyes. On such a day, burying my body in the light becomes my highest priority. Work or appointments are cast aside, and I go out to be close to nature.
四季折々に見る自然の輝きはそれぞれの趣があってとても美しい。シアトルの秋は雨期に入るのでからっと晴れる日が少ない。さーっと降っていた雨で浮遊していた塵が大地に沈められたのか、たまの快晴日にはハッと思わせるクリスタルな光線が空間を透過し、目の曇りが拭われたかのように見えるすっきりとした風景が出現する。そうなると光の中に体を埋めて過ごすのがその日の最優先事項になり、仕事だろうが約束があろうがほっぽらかして自然に親しむことになる。
Simply watching the leaves change color and form with the seasons offers a changing landscape to enjoy. In autumn the green begins to fade. As the temperature falls, the leaves turn yellow and red all at once, until finally the grand finale arrives: shriveled and torn leaves dancing everywhere. Only then does true winter begin. Around that time, the evergreens that had gone unnoticed proudly sway their green foliage, ready to take over the stage.
季節によって色や形が変化する木々の葉を見るだけでも景色の違いが楽しめる。秋になると緑が薄くなり始め、気温が下がってくると一気に黄色や赤色に変色していき、そしてついには縮んだり切れたりしている枯れ葉があちこちに舞うフィナーレの豪華な見せ場があって、ようやく本格的な冬に入る。その頃には目立たなかった常緑樹は緑を誇らしげに揺らし、舞台を引き継ぐ用意がととのうのだ。
Washington State is said to have 7,000 lakes and 4,000 rivers. Indeed, no matter which direction one travels from central Seattle, before going very far one is certain to encounter water, so the figures somehow seem plausible. It makes me realize that this is a place where people, dwellings, and water form an inseparable way of life. At this season, when the weather is fine, lake and sky display blues of many intensities, while the changing colors of the trees along the shore stand out from the landscape.
ワシントン州には湖が大小７０００、河川が４０００あるという。確かにシアトルの市街地からどちらの方向へ進んでも、それほど遠くないところで必ず水に突き当たるので、この数字もなんとなく納得できる。ここは人と住と水が一体となって生活が成り立っている土地なんだと実感する。今の時期は天気がよければ湖も空も様々な輝度で青が映え、岸辺の木々の紅葉の変化が景色の中から抜き出てくる。
Living amid so much water, boats are naturally indispensable to leisure. In every town one often sees boats being briskly towed on trailers. Those with room keep them beside their houses, while those without it can use one of the many storage marinas, so there is no inconvenience. Owning a small fishing boat sits near the top of my wish list for the future, when I have more time.
これだけ水の多い環境に住むとやはり余暇を楽しむ方法として船はかかせない。ボートを軽快なトレーラーで運搬しているのをどこの街でもよく見かける。余地があれば住宅の回りに置いたり、無ければ保管してくれる駐艇場もあちこちにあるから不便はない。小さなフィッシングボートを持つことは、自分が将来時間が出来た時に実行したいウイッシュリストの上位に鎮座している。
Along lakes and rivers near the city, there is almost always a wooded path open to people. One encounters walkers and joggers there, as well as deer, rabbits, squirrels, and occasionally even coyotes.
市街地近隣の湖や川沿いには必ずといっていいほど人が通れる林道が設けてあって、散歩やジョギングをしている人と出会うことがあるし、鹿、うさぎ、リスなどの野生動物や時にコヨーテも見かけたりする。
On the University of Washington campus is a sailboat mooring available to the public. It is quiet and beautifully situated, and on warm, windless days I like to sit nearby and pass the time eating a lunch I have bought.
ワシントン大学の敷地内には一般の人も使えるヨットの寄せ場がある。とても静かで環境がいいので、暖かくて風のない日はこの周辺に座って買ってきたランチを食べながら時間を過ごすのが好きだ。
The houses cry out in delight beneath sunlight pouring down for the first time in a while, sparkling brilliantly. Even the geese flying over the lake must be surprised. Soon the sky will close beneath heavy clouds and days of cold rain will continue, so while we can, let us raise our voices together with them.
久しぶりに降り注ぐ太陽の光にわ～っと歓んできらきらと照り輝く家々。湖上を飛んでいる雁もびっくりしているだろう。間もなく空は厚い雲に閉ざされ、冷たい雨が降り続ける日々がくるのだから今のうちに君たちも一緒に声を高らかに上げようよ。
One may sit alone and read, or let the mind wander. When hunger comes, one may spread out a lunch while admiring autumn's colors. Let us set aside ample time and enjoy this moment of the season.
一人座って本を読むのも良し、ぼんやり思いを巡らすのも良し、お腹が空いたら秋の彩色を愛でながら弁当を広げるのもいいだろう。たっぷり時間をとってこの季節のひとときを楽しもうではないか。
As darkness began to fall, this water plant shone with a mysterious light that made me wonder if it were luminous at night. With a change of generations close at hand, it seemed to summon its last reserves of energy and rouse itself, trying to make the coming withering and browning look as beautiful as possible. How could I resist photographing such beauty?
暗くなり始めた頃、この水草は夜光性かと思わせるような不思議な光で葉を輝かせていた。間もなく世代交代となるラストのエネルギーを振り絞って自分を奮い立たせ、枯れて茶に変色していくのを少しでもきれいに見せようとしているのだ。こんなに美しい姿を撮らずにいられようか。
