The Wind from Seattle Vol. 08

The world's population is about to reach seven billion, and this country has already surpassed 300 million. As industry flourishes, people gather and cities must continue to grow. These days it apparently takes less than ten years for the world to add another billion people. By the end of this century, will every field and mountain have become a residential district? I hope human wisdom will allow life to prosper while preserving much of nature. Japan is largely homogeneous, whereas throughout its history America has received many immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Britain, Italy, France, and elsewhere in Europe, and their cultures still lend their fragrance to its cities. More recently, there also seem to be many immigrants from Latin America and Asia. In private life, many people speak the languages of their homelands. A walk through town brings a great variety of languages to the ear, giving the place a truly international character. In such an environment cultures coexist; no one cares what clothes another person wears or what language they speak. I like this open and free atmosphere.

With a notebook computer, or rather, a single smartphone, anyone can access information from around the world wherever they are, and in recent years the boundaries between peoples seem to be disappearing. Sharing knowledge gives us a sense of closeness and makes others feel less like strangers. When our eyes meet, I give even someone I do not know a small smile, raising the corners of my mouth in greeting. Most return the expression, and that is reassuring.

The city is lively and energetic. People's energy radiates through the streets, and merely walking there I feel its stimulation against my skin. For me, downtown Seattle has just the right amount of foot traffic. Too many people exhaust me, while too few make me lonely; mine is a difficult temperament, so I am grateful for a city with this moderate bustle. Yet at a baseball game I prefer a full crowd that lifts my spirits, while in nature I prefer to be entirely alone. My parents used to call me a troublesome, elusive child.

Rental movies are generally in English, with Spanish and French subtitles available on many of them. Computer games, too, can now be downloaded directly to one's device. Worldwide releases that let players choose from around ten languages are becoming standard, and I can feel national divisions disappearing.

Even after generations in America, the culture of each person's ancestry remains rooted in daily life, so preferences in such things as ways of living differ. I find it fascinating that these people mingle and share the same place, and admirable that they understand and respect one another. Put simply, even if one plus one equals three rather than two for someone, I like the easygoing attitude that says, “Well, that can be all right too.” Yet among different cultures, basic ideas of “common sense” differ. A business contract, for example, may run to dozens of thickly detailed pages in order to specify every point. It depends on the matter, but in Japan a few pages can often be signed because a largely homogeneous people share the same foundation of what is taken for granted.

As we enter the cold confinement of winter, it is a delight to see a bright, splendid scene that suggests spring. Seeing “spring” in winter warms the heart far more than seeing it in spring itself. Flowers gently opening in that newborn, shining light appeared before my mind, and I could almost smell their freshness. Knowing that such joy will come in time gives me courage to pass the approaching season of cold rain in reasonably good spirits.

A different world exists on the back streets. Away from the clamor, I find a place to sit in an alley and claim a corner of my own with a deep, easy breath. Gazing absently at an old man wholly absorbed in sweeping, I become relaxed and calm. I realize that I am no longer the self whose very existence can seem uncertain among the crowd.

In the pause before dinner service begins, is the cook resting by the back door with a cigarette while thinking about tonight's special? He smiled throughout, and looked every bit like a man who would prepare delicious Italian food. I have moved through many different jobs, but never worked as a cook. How wonderful it must feel when someone enjoys a dish you have made. If I were to cook, perhaps Italian would suit me. I lack the patience to train for years in Japanese cuisine while being cuffed about by the head chef. French would require learning what seems a difficult language, and the enormous wok in Chinese cooking looks heavy. I love garlic, so Korean might be good. No, I love eating every kind of food, but somehow Italian cooking, made cheerfully in a kitchen with canzone playing, seems to fit me best.
