In early morning, the misty Sammamish River quietly marks time. Distant trees float softly on the water, appearing and disappearing as though lightly wrapped in thread unwound from a cocoon. The view is indistinct and seems dusted with grain. In such a scene, an excellent lens and sensor exercise unwanted performance and blow even the mist away. I therefore set the camera to its maximum ISO 2500, hoping for the roughness of noise.
In winter fields, tree leaves and ground-covering grass lose their color, and the whole landscape displays the faded elegance of austere maturity.
Winter in Seattle is the rainy season. Moss grows on bark saturated with water, covering it tightly in green flannel as protection from the cold. The trees must be preparing for severe winter.
The cottonwood that once carried thick green leaves and shook with magnificent noise has now shed almost all of them. The few remaining yellows shine, preserving its dignity. This is a beautiful figure in its own way; preparations for revival next spring have begun.
Nostalgic scenery particular to this season lets us feel the joy of four seasons. Perhaps ISO 2500 draws out the emotion well here too.
“Even in cold winter, I bloom vigorously,” declares the amaryllis. Everything around it has drawn inward with hunched shoulders, yet it stands splendid and beautiful. Watching naturally straightens my back.
Since coming to America I have had few occasions to wear a suit. Especially in recent years, not only in my industry, people often omit even jackets at formal intercompany meetings. An occasional dinner in formal dress, eaten with good posture, therefore tightens the spirit. I even use polite language I had forgotten and feel somehow refined. In the end, of course, I choke on the red wine I meant to drink elegantly, spill it over the table, and return to myself.
I often photograph other restaurant guests. At a meal, people open their feelings, enjoy flavor, and satisfy hunger, lowering their barriers. I love their relaxed, natural state.
Seeing this scene made me think of the film The Da Vinci Code. Two people in conversation appear in the mirror, creating an image somehow religious and mysterious.
When rain joins night in the city, the scene inevitably enchants me and my heart sinks farther into an imaginary world. I stop, separated from reality, my existence disappears, and I wander a strange story in an unknown place.
At night, figures and shadows of passing people lack the clear outlines of day, yet appear more dramatic to my eyes. Does darkness make it easier to sense the fragrance of the life each conceals? Or is it because the stories I favor so often take night as their stage?
Inside an elevator, two people spoke delightedly about how to enjoy the holiday season. It was a scene that compelled the camera.
Christmas is nearly here. At this season my spirits rise and my breathing quickens. Will some great happiness come next year? Every year I allow myself that extravagant hope. Happy holidays, everyone, and best wishes for the new year.
