In the Seattle Art Museum lobby, a couple were taking a smartphone selfie. Their unstudied, appealing clothes caught my eye. The two outfits matched with great style. We spoke briefly and they let me photograph. Their natural pose blended instantly into this temple of art, while tenderness and mutual care showed through. Photographing such wonderful people moved me until my chest grew warm. I have pressed the shutter tens of thousands of times, but this once-in-a-lifetime encounter produced a precious picture I will remember.
Matching long strides, they passed along the street in lively conversation. Their confident figures were beautiful to watch. Surely they move through life just as positively and smoothly.
It is wonderful to remain active with friends at an older age. The record shop is old, the town is old, and all these old companions continue sharing time.
The picture book Where's Wally?, published in Britain in 1987 and known as Where's Waldo? in America, became popular worldwide. It appeared in Japan around the same time, and I remember playing with it. Recalling those days, I made a great commotion and photographed frame after frame while saying, “Where's Scott?” What exactly is my mental age?
We live in human society through relationships with others. Anyone who dislikes it entirely must retreat to the mountains and become self-sufficient. Yet sometimes such exchange becomes burdensome, and we want to be alone, even briefly.
Looking outside after reading, I see that shadows reflected in the glass door have softened. When I turn on a light thinking, “Is it already this late?” I appreciate that time has flowed quietly today.
For immersing oneself in solitude, a freezing rainy night is best. At opening time, I enter an empty restaurant wet and hunched. As I gaze absently outside, a server brings water and a menu. Half listening as she explains the day's special, I breathe deeply and fill my chest with the loneliness rising inside.
Delicious food fills the stomach, restores energy, and changes the mood. The wet pavement is not bad. Lights reflect brightly until it feels like an enjoyable city.
Rain grew heavier. I wanted to be near people, so I would rest at the Starbucks ahead over a hot latte.
A large puddle fills the deserted back street. Cars splash through, making reflected streetlights waver. It is nearly time to go home.
The rainy season has finally begun, though an occasional clear day remains. The sky is not a pure blue; clouds like torn cotton float carelessly. Yellow poplar leaves hold on, saying “Not yet, not yet,” and create late autumn's flavor. Soon the gray world will arrive.
