At a small theater in a small town, I saw the musical Snapshots. After their child graduates and leaves home, a wife grows tired of a husband who notices only work and of their dry daily life. As she packs a suitcase to leave, she picks up an album containing snapshots of herself and her husband when young and of their family after marriage. The photographs appear one after another across the walls of the stage room. Her husband returns. Looking through them together and remembering many events, they recognize anew the weight of their shared time and decide to continue living together. Yes, snapshots are the image data of a life.
As autumn deepens, colored street trees become prominent. It was a cold morning and people seemed to move a little faster. I am invisible in this snapshot, but stand on this side with the camera, sharing the time and space, feeling cold wind on my skin and enjoying the beginning of autumn color. In truth, I too am in the photograph.
I have made street snapshots for a long time, but because I did not appear in the frame, I never felt present; I thought only of a two-dimensional image of “other people.” Yet I am here, pressing the shutter with the intention to photograph the scene. Seen three-dimensionally, the image must include me. Add “time,” the instant, and Minkowski spacetime, and perhaps my photographs are four-dimensional images for me.
I can hear the scent of coffee, people's voices, and passing cars. I remember the atmosphere gathering them together. It is not merely a flat landscape, but one spatial moment that includes me.
When I raise the camera thinking, “Ah, this is good,” I dissolve into the frame too. The lens becomes my eye; united with the camera, I stride into the scene. That is how I release the shutter.
This time, rather than merely becoming part of the frame, I nearly ceased to exist physically. Both the M9-P and M Monochrom were away for repair, so I took my old Epson R-D1s from a shelf. The instant I photographed two police officers from behind, both wearing unusually thick bulletproof vests, they quickly turned while reaching toward their right hips. I froze. Yet they were the ones truly frightened. The camera's shutter produces a loud metallic click resembling the cocking of a pistol, and they instinctively prepared to respond. Although I was not entirely ignorant of firearms, it was a careless mistake. I received a thorough five-minute lecture, which felt like five hours.
Street artists often possess thoroughly professional ability, and passersby stop to listen. I hear that many find purpose and excitement simply performing in the city for their daily bread, traveling south for warmth in winter. There must be hardships, but I admire such a free life.
One concert program included Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra. Inspired by Nietzsche's philosophy, this grand symphonic poem takes nature and life as its themes. Because I had happened to see Snapshots the day before, I enjoyed it while superimposing snapshots from my own life.
Just when gentle autumn weather seems settled, the next day may bring rain, strong wind, and a sharp drop in temperature. Such early mornings are very cold. I rush into a newly opened standing coffee shop and blow over a hot, fragrant, fresh cup before sipping. The moment heightens weekend freedom and lifts my spirits. Now the day begins.
At home or in a restaurant, I want meals to take time. Many acquaintances eat at sports-car speed. When young I had to match seniors and friends, which was hard for someone poor at eating quickly. Now that I am older, companions sometimes leave part of their meal while waiting for me to catch up. Feeling apologetic, I hurry and shovel food in.
An old seasoned shelf, a half-drunk wine bottle, espresso cup, lemon end, orderly glasses, and antique taps for hot and cold water. These working “still-life” objects feel deeply human and carry the atmosphere of a romantic story.
This pair do not seem married. From the photograph, the woman appears dominant, while the man hesitates to confess his love. Yet she is eagerly awaiting those words. Courage!
Snapshots... By chance we share a space. Let me casually enter your lives, laugh, rejoice, grieve, and cry together. I want to share the data of our lives contained in that four-dimensional image.
