Washington, home to Seattle, the continental American city nearest Japan, has Puget Sound winding intricately inland from the Pacific, with many lakes extending to the Columbia River border. Seattle is especially surrounded by water, making the region convenient for brief leisure. On a September morning when temperature had dropped suddenly, deep mist covered the distance. After breakfast, walkers gathered by twos and threes on the beach exposed by low tide.
The instant sunlight begins entering through gaps in deep mist is breathtaking. Everything remains pale blue-white while only the sea starts glittering faint red. Even the finest jewel could not hope for such splendid sparkle.
A secluded local inlet remains uncrowded even on weekends, allowing one to enjoy time quietly at one's own pace.
This broad, shallow beach must be part of daily life for the child. How innocent the figure, stepping through grass and searching for small fish. I noticed myself smiling as I released the shutter.
For the first time I watched fly fishing for salmon. The fisherman must have been highly skilled; his cast drew a beautiful arc and looked like art. After the fly danced through the air several times, a hooked salmon ran in every direction, the rod bent, and the battle continued.
Charlie landed a magnificent silver salmon, coho, about sixty centimeters long. “Will you eat it?” “Yes, I like salmon.” “Then take it.” “May I really? Thank you!” That evening we immediately salted and grilled it. Needless to say, the rich, sweet, fragrant flesh, full of sea-mineral flavor, was a delight.
As darkness approaches, the atmosphere changes and the landscape suggests a cold village somewhere in Scandinavia. Many descendants of Norwegian immigrants apparently live in this area.
After sunset, silhouettes of mountains dissolved into the slightly hazy distance as though drawn in pale ink. Finally they sank into the steadily darkening sky.
The terrain contains many bays surrounded by gentle hills, each supporting a port town large or small. Stop the car and open a window, and distinctive air carrying the scent of the tide enters, leading the mind toward romance.
Port Townsend lies about seventy kilometers northwest of Seattle in a straight line. Its center still contains rows of century-old buildings, re-roofed and repainted but preserved across generations. Even the people walking fit the background in fashions suggesting the earlier period.
Following her as though traveling through time, I discovered she was a tarot reader perfectly matched to the atmosphere. She had built this hut herself and apparently lived, or worked, there. She said another world existed inside. I felt certain it must.
A truck like this suits such a town. With no vehicle-inspection system, an old one remains active if it still moves. Ha, just like me.
“A languid afternoon. A young man never seen in this port entered the landing to the buzz of a small motor.” Circumstances had brought him here. Soon he would meet, by fate, a girl in a yellow floral dress arriving by bicycle to deliver a late meal to her father before his fishing boat departed. But the young man carried a secret past... There is the prologue to a romantic mystery. Ah, I love scenes like this.
