On Sunday morning, I wake, stretch deeply, and begin with a light piano piece. First comes sharply chilled, clear Sauvignon Blanc. Closing my eyes as I taste it, a cool grassland flavor spreads through my mouth; its fresh passage down the throat sharpens my body. The clean scent of green grapes rising through my nose expands expectations for the day.
I no longer pack work as tightly as before, yet Sunday remains joyful. When I was young, working Saturday was normal. That feeling remains, making weekend freedom, especially Sunday, exceptional. At home I may be assigned chores, while something good seems likely outside, so I hastily take the camera and leave.
The delight of this season is dappled sunlight. Before the foliage thickens, sun passes through gaps among branches and leaves, spreading beautiful small patterns designed by deciduous trees across the ground.
When wind passes, the still-small leaves rub together and converse with a charming chime. Patterns drawn by leaking light change one after another, creating the mysterious sensation of inhabiting an illusion.
I love the romantic air of sloping streets. Though it is early summer, some days remain cold, and I still hesitate to replace clothes in the dresser with summer wear. Temperatures fall sharply at night.
A scene like this recalls my three first loves: fifth grade, second year of middle school, and first year of high school. None was fulfilled, but I remember them all. The first was an admired girl one year older; the second, a fair-skinned, plump type; the third, a Spanish, passionate type who awakened “love for the mature opposite sex.” Each produced a different flutter in the chest, so each was a first love. Writing this restores those days and makes my heart pound.
For a restaurant this size, with a large bread oven in front, I have never seen such a bright, spacious kitchen. Ordinarily, equipment and fixtures crowd a kitchen and tension shows in cooks' movements. Here, unusually, every cook from the chef down is a woman, and all work with cheerful smiles.
Beside it, seating across two floors occupies about the same area as the kitchen. The restaurant has an exceptionally pleasant, light-filled atmosphere. The taste? Stylish casual French food, delicious enough to inspire repeated visits.
Walking the city is delightful because one encounters many scenes. People's expressions vary: someone seems to have received good news; another hurries seriously with an armful of books. Separate stories pass in both directions along the street.
When it grows hot, walking in shade and window shopping is pleasant. Ideally, city walking should have no fixed time and plenty of leisure. Otherwise it may improve health, but one will miss new discoveries and emotions that remain in the heart.
Fine weather, fragrant young leaves, beautiful dappled light, and your first-rate smile. With so many happy gifts over a weekend, what complaint could there be? “Time, stop, in the dizziness of life,” as the song says. I will not go so far as to wager everything on this woman, Mr. Yazawa, but it is a happy day.
