The Wind from Seattle Vol. 43

The Wind from Seattle Vol. 43

That star above is not Sapporo Beer. The R beneath means Reserve. This is the Starbucks flagship that opened late last year. Japan apparently also has Starbucks Reserve shops where special beans can be tasted. I had held back because I did not want this to become a tourist guide. But Seattle is Starbucks' birthplace, so I am showing the concept store opened here before anywhere else. Its formal name is the very long “Starbucks Reserve Roastery & Tasting Room,” in short, a place to taste freshly roasted limited coffees. It occupies 1,400 square meters in a renovated building nearly a century old.

Inside stands an enormous copper roaster. Beans are apparently sent from here to Reserve stores worldwide. A smaller machine lets visitors watch roasting close up, while a large display shows the variety and origin of the beans currently being roasted.

Another interesting feature is watching five roasted beans travel through tubes into separate glass cyclones. Pantheon Blend No. 1 is an exceptionally delicious coffee available only here, and my strongest recommendation. One can order the chosen bean as espresso, drip, press, siphon, or by other preferred methods.

A large basement storehouse is filled with sacks sent from producing regions. Surprisingly, the whole space can be seen through a window facing the restroom sinks. Bars and café tables occupy the first and second floors, but the feeling is truly of standing inside a large factory. The original first shop is about a twenty-minute walk away, so tasting old and new is possible. I invariably drink this and that until I leave with glittering eyes and a mind in overdrive.

Regaining composure and looking at the city's color, spring sunlight refracted by young street-tree leaves enters even the rooms and looks beautiful. This yellow-green differs from autumn's; it carries the energy of growth still to come.

A young couple from Chicago appeared to enjoy downtown's new green as well. Yes, it lifts my spirits too.

Shall we have French lunch today? This restaurant too occupies a converted old factory or warehouse. I love the high ceiling, broad space, and retro atmosphere.

There are separate tables, but the open kitchen joins cooking and seating until one feels at home in a family kitchen. When a dish is ready, it comes directly, piping hot: “Here you are!” I might almost call, “Mother, tea!”

The baguette, or perhaps it was a Parisian loaf, served with the meal was excellent. It reminded me of thick Japanese sliced bread. I want that too.

Images from this Thambar change the atmosphere. Imagination expands and threatens to carry me into another world.

My apologies. Recently I looked through the finder intending to photograph a charming tulip, but found another flower in the mirror and focused there instead. This camera has a wandering eye.

Speaking of flowers, here was another magnificent bloom. She filled the whole shop with a splendid spring fragrance, at roughly five thousand watts of brightness. Me? My eyes are ten thousand volts. The lens? It broke.

Let us end with hanging flowers. When I bought the Visoflex, I heard this Hektor was an excellent match and acquired it for the price of a Shokado bento. Without the dedicated extension, I left it unused. Recently I tried it directly on the M8 for greater telephoto reach. The focus peak was very difficult to judge until I adapted, but I like it. The fifteen-blade aperture gives beautiful blur. This lens is sixty years old. It is gentle and highly intelligent without asserting itself too strongly. A fine fellow.
