The Golden Gate Bridge and downtown came into view. At last, San Francisco. In this season of 1988, it was the first place in America where I arrived from Japan and put down roots. Looking over the whole city from the air, memories of beginning work and life in a foreign country returned one after another at tremendous speed, like watching a video on fast-forward.
I lived in San Francisco for two years and continued traveling back and forth for about two years after moving to Seattle, but lately had seldom visited. Even now I remember the city's scent. It may only be a feeling, but it is exceptionally “elegant.” Then, hope, anxiety, and loneliness were mixed. Yet deeper within, I sensed a mysterious attraction, the feeling that something existed or was about to happen. That excitement seems to have given me energy through severe times.
The jewelry-store guard wore stylish civilian clothes. Thinking it improper to photograph before the shop, he walked a little way down the street with me, though I was not a customer, then posed here. He was a handsome, sophisticated young man who looked entirely dependable should trouble occur.
Romance overflows wherever one looks in this city. The man speaks passionately, moving head and hands, while she simply watches him and listens happily. Their happiness is lovely.
After a conference, I went to a hotel for a meeting and found IT people holding a small party before dinner. The soft light from large lamps wrapped in thin fabric was beautiful.
Beside Union Square, the city's night face is secretive and awakens curiosity. Should I step into the great current that joins people hurrying home from work, travelers, and many races? Where would it carry me? It looks interesting.
It would be a waste to return to the hotel and sleep. To enjoy time, one can wander into any of downtown's many bars. No one investigates who or what I am; being treated as simply another person brings ease. Yoichi, Taketsuru, and Hakushu whiskies stand on the shelf, reflecting a truly international city.
Returning to the hotel pleasantly tipsy and receiving a smile like this would be delightful. Fatigue would vanish, and I might think of asking, “Would you like a drink?” Yet not doing so is the wisdom of a mature adult. If she refused, the perfect day would be ruined.
A signature San Francisco sight is the cable car traveling steep streets beneath the California sky. The fare is a little expensive, I recall six dollars per ride, with a cheaper day pass for repeated trips, but it has colored the city for more than a century and is indispensable to the landscape.
One often sees young women with very large dogs. Ordinarily, a small cute pet is standard; is this San Francisco fashion? The muzzled fellow, apparently fierce, had not noticed the suspicious character approaching for a sneak shot.
Neither large nor small, the city's size and open atmosphere feel awakening. My spirit dissolves into it naturally, without discomfort. Seattle, my present base, feels like a mini-San Francisco with similar terrain and culture, and I love it, but this place has a certain generosity. Since it led me to settle permanently in America, my feelings run deep. The flight is under two hours, and I want to visit more often.
Recently I often make snapshots with a 21mm lens. Speaking intuitively, it renders rich color and transparency. Aperture creates very deep focus, allowing rapid shots, so I favor it. It cannot intensify an image through large blur, but offers clean pan-focus pictures. Sometimes I photograph expecting to bring the subject closer by cropping. Though a quarter-century old, the lens has resilience and its image does not deteriorate greatly under retouching. I do not seek blueprint accuracy in photographs; expression of the image takes priority. Distortion and corner falloff from an ultra-wide lens are therefore no problem. I accept those characteristics as emotional qualities. The immediacy of ultra-wide photography has a fresh magnificence no other lens can express.
