Autumn's arrival. Thinking that another year has circled around is my custom at this season. The sky is blue and immense, and clouds fly ever higher. Watching them always recalls childhood sports days. My son, grandson, and son-in-law invited me on an adventure drive. It was Sunday and I had several plans, but three generations of men together sounded interesting, so I agreed at once.
My son owns a rugged vehicle, and the word “adventure” made me half excited and half anxious that we would visit somewhere dangerous. He showed me a map: the destination was a small lake partway up an eastern mountain. A tiny mark did resemble a lake, but no surrounding roads appeared. A large Native tribe once lived on the mountain and created horse trails, now used by cross-country skiers in winter. He had heard we could drive them. I doubted a huge vehicle would fit, but when we left the highway and entered a broad road I secretly smiled. A passenger car could manage this easily; calling it adventure was an exaggeration.
Using map and compass, we left the earlier road and aimed toward the lake. Eventually we entered mountain terrain and suddenly reached this point. “There's no road.” “It looks as though the road continues beyond here.” “But the left is a cliff; we must climb to the right or fall.” “Shall rock-paper-scissors decide whether we go?” Our lives were at risk and they proposed rock-paper-scissors. We could neither turn nor reverse. Everyone except the driver leaned fully right. We released seat belts and door locks and opened the right windows, ready to escape if the vehicle began sliding. I could barely breathe from tension, but we crossed the obstacle. So this was adventure after all.
Compared with that, this was better merely because a track existed, but it was not a road for vehicles. The wheels had to straddle it, and if a large tree stood beside us, returning backward would be impossible without cutting it down. With no mobile signal, someone would have to walk to habitation for help, and darkness would come. None of us wanted a headline reading, “Reckless three-generation family stranded; vehicle rescued by heavy helicopter.” We folded our arms together.
As everyone loudly discussed useless plans to hide anxiety, we reached a broad space and breathed. An army cannot fight on an empty stomach, so we ate rice-ball lunches. Handmade food tastes extraordinarily good in such surroundings. Full of happiness, with a little anxiety. Turning back still required another route, so everyone agreed to continue. With full stomachs, courage surged. I wanted to suggest joining hands and shouting a battle cry, but refrained because they would call it uncool.
We made it! We advanced too far in celebration, the tires began sinking into wet ground, and we hurriedly reversed.
People must rarely come here. The water was perfectly clear, and air and everything else fresh. Nurtured by great nature, the place quietly marked time.
Louis, my grandson; Keith T, my son; Keith M, my son-in-law. We did well. The sight was not splendid, but let us share the emotion of its mysterious beauty. Seeing power lines in the distance brought strange relief. In an atmosphere so far removed from daily life, even such inorganic evidence of humanity can create that feeling.
We needed ample time to descend before dark, but after catching one brown trout, decided to try for the summit.
We searched for any path with an upward grade and continued higher and higher.
Good! The second round was complete. This was today's goal. Easy. Do not go too far forward.
A magnificent view. If this were a grassy hill, it would be The Sound of Music. The clearing contained old traces of a system once used to lower cut timber by ropeway or something similar.
It had carried us through every difficulty. Strong and sturdy, it was the representative American vehicle: a Jeep. Please work hard on the descent too.
Fortunately we did not need the emergency water, food, or heating supplies. The descent was not easy, but we made our way home safely. By the time we arrived the sun had set and it was cold; the hot-pot meal prepared by the family was wonderful. We salted and grilled the thirty-centimeter trout, and everyone took one bite. It was exceptionally sweet and fragrant, unlike any fish I had eaten, and deeply moving.
Thus ended a one-day adventure across three generations. We often have opportunities to talk, but this experience created a new feeling not found through words: solidarity from sharing danger and entrusting ourselves to the same fate. That was a precious discovery.
