When lively music began in a restaurant, an older man and woman started dancing. They looked genuinely happy, as though remembering their first dates. Both opened their hearts and returned to their younger selves.
I wished this photograph could reach these women fifty years from now. When they understand how precious a moment of conversation with friends had been, I want them to remember it with affection.
In summer I often meet young people who seem to be traveling without knowing where they came from or where they are going. Some simply seek adventure during vacation; others explore regional cultures for a university thesis; still others have escaped reality. These two looked somehow at a loss. I hope the experience becomes the beginning of great happiness later.
It was a slightly humid day alternating between drizzle and sunlight. Beside the lake, the water's coolness creates natural air conditioning. With a light breeze, it is an ideal place for a nap.
I think social exchange between young and old is more common here than in Japan. A shared hobby or another occasion may bring them together, but groups form around what people want and are able to do rather than age. Résumés do not list age, sex, or family composition, and asking such questions in an interview is forbidden; a person's current ability and value should not be judged by those facts. Newspapers and other reports therefore do not place an age after a name. In this culture, an age difference creates little concern and people can associate easily.
Near the restaurant entrance, a woman folds what looks like a napkin while staring far into the distance, completely indifferent to her surroundings. Her awareness must be within an inner world. As a photographer, I love such an unguarded face.
I once did work that involved taking orders. Remembering it, I aimed the camera and thought that if someone had looked at me this way, my hands would have trembled. I could neither write nor remember the order, nor even raise my face.
A stylish poodle. When I tried to photograph him, he seemed to say, “Wait a moment,” and began licking his face clean. I released the shutter before he finished. Ha, sorry.
The phrase is “This is in account of my loving you forever,” though “in account of” should properly be “on account of.” What passionate, romantic words. Yet a sad history lies behind this tattoo. About six years ago, a San Francisco woman found a handsome, gentle boyfriend and they lived happily. One day he had to return temporarily to his Brazilian hometown. After seeing him off that morning, she found atop the refrigerator a typed short story about love that he had left. In a corner beside his signature he had written, “This is on account of my loving you forever.” It was proof of his eternal love. Soon news came that he had died in a car accident. In grief, she had his last words tattooed on her arm as a vow of eternal love. After a newspaper story spread nationwide, other women apparently began tattooing the same phrase for men they loved.
"This is in (本来はon) account of my loving you forever" 何と情熱的でロマンチックな言葉だろう。 その片隅に彼のサインと共に手書きされた言葉が、「This is on account of my loving you forever」(これがあなたを永遠に愛する証です)だった…。
At this time one can drive the eastern country roads that deep winter snow makes impassable. Traveling through endless hills, I feel nostalgia whenever I see traces of a structure, even without knowing what it was. Is it because I remember childhood, when I loved films and watched many Westerns, their fragments remaining in my mind?
There I often see abandoned barns, storage for tools, livestock, and feed, on farms that must have flourished during the late-nineteenth-century pioneer era. The phrase suddenly comes to mind: rise and decline are the way of the world in every country.
A little over an hour east of Seattle by freeway lies Roslyn, an old town that prospered through coal mining and railway construction for eighty years beginning in the 1880s. Buildings and other traces remain. From 1990 to 1995 it served as the setting for the popular television series Northern Exposure, where it represented the fictional Alaskan town of Cicely. With fewer than a thousand residents, it is very appealing; I would like to live there even briefly.
Do these containers for coffee, tea, tobacco, and sweets date from the nineteenth or early twentieth century? Every logo painted on the tin is distinctive, and the use of color is so expressive I never tire of looking. Old designs have genuine character and deserve their value as antiques.
I do not collect old objects, but their shapes, colors, and pictures have a freshness absent today. Surrounding towns have many antique shops, and visiting them while walking is enjoyable. Physically I too am an antique, but I have not reached that state. Perhaps it will be a long time before my appearance develops a flavor as deep as these tins.
