The Wind from Seattle Vol. 34

The Wind from Seattle Vol. 34

When walking fields and mountains, I slip a six-ounce hip flask into my pocket. I am nearly a nondrinker and cannot consume much, but love alcohol generally, especially the experience of whiskey. That day I filled it with an Islay malt. After burying it in snow until thoroughly cold, I poured a little into my mouth. First came a spicy stimulation against the membranes. Gradually, warmth released its distinctive wild aroma of peat smoke, and the flavor spread slowly, slowly through my mouth. After waiting fully, I let the liquid descend and began to feel faint warmth in esophagus and stomach. By then the sweet fragrance of the sherry cask passed through the nose into the air. When the whiskey's character merged with severe nature, happiness in standing there filled my whole body. (Seattle)

But what a fate...

The data show that I made this photograph at 2:26 p.m. in Seattle on February 9, 7:26 a.m. on the tenth in Japan. (From March 9, daylight saving advances Seattle another hour.) At that time, I had no way of knowing that a grave accident was striking a friend of thirty years in Kamakura.

Ten years younger than I, he remains an active racing driver and is strong in mind and body. On February 8, the Kanto region experienced record snow. The next morning, during a peaceful moment at home before breakfast, a sudden snow accident left him unconscious, and he remains so. What does it mean that at the same instant we were both in snow? For the first time in decades, I brought out a pipe we once smoked together and prayed for his recovery while listening to one of his favorite records. (Seattle)

Those unable to appreciate the tone of Scott the shakuhachi player have harshly judged that the instrument would be more useful for blowing on campfire wood. There was no need to go that far. But he told me he loved the elegant world created by the combination of the distinctive low sound of air rubbing bamboo and lustrous high notes. It entered his heart. (Seattle)

Kiyoka Kimura is now undertaking many projects: moving and rebuilding the ballet school she directs and working to broaden Japan's ballet world. Busy every day, she wants to leave the techniques and art she acquired in Germany to those who follow. Draw near and wonderful vitality surrounds her. (Kagurazaka, Tokyo)

Returning to the hotel after dinner, I saw a woman using a smartphone in the lobby. Drawn by her strong signal, I approached, thinking I must photograph her. The instant I began raising the camera, she lifted her face and our eyes met. I explained that I was a traveler staying there and asked to make her photograph. She smiled and nodded. Kneeling on the floor, I pressed the shutter as though proposing marriage. In the image she shows no caution at all, but looks utterly natural, like a friend of many years. It became a portrait I love. My way is to leave unknown encounters behind in the heart, but she made me wish this meeting need not end after once. (Ebisu, Tokyo)

She is an honest, cheerful young woman with an excellent character. At university she studies an advanced field I could not understand even with explanation. I admired the way she ended dinner early to return to homework. When her mother called and she looked up in surprise, she seemed not fully present; her expression suggested the textbook still ruled her mind. (Seattle)

She was to begin work at this shop that day. First, she said, she would finish good coffee and sweets, then set out for battle. She looked vaguely anxious, yet perhaps also determined. When she finished and tried to pay, the owner said, “No, no, it's fine.” I was glad to sit at a counter where such a moment occurred. (Akasaka, Tokyo)

Later, still curious, I returned and found her working happily in uniform. Watching her, I drank the shop's special Blue Mountain coffee. It was bitter but left a clean finish, and I stepped into the rainy street in a fine mood. (Akasaka, Tokyo)

That day I visited René Burri's monochrome exhibition at the Leica Gallery in Ginza. The Leica staff seemed to read Photo Yodobashi, and I was delighted that they remembered the Leica Akademie article in Volume 15. Afterward I sat at a bright café counter facing Miyuki Street, ate a beef-stew lunch set, and wandered the weekend pedestrian zone. The number of foreigners surprised me, but everyone walked smiling. A woman trotted after her fast companion calling, “Wait for me,” and her fashion suited her beautifully. (Ginza, Tokyo)

I visited Carolina Ceca's Infinito exhibition at the Spanish Embassy. Through a friend, I was fortunate to meet the visual artist and hear her explain the work. The twenty-three pieces used photography, origami, watercolor, mixed media, drawing, ash, and more. After living several years in Japan and deeply understanding Japanese aesthetics and sensibility, she experienced surreal moments in her creative process and touched the “infinity” she had sought. The works were deeply moving. Warm, springlike sunlight entered the white venue that day and intensified the theme. Standing beyond a light-filled display box, she seemed truly within a surreal world. (Roppongi, Tokyo)

This small twenty-centimeter wall clock has been in use since we lived in Japan, marking time in the kitchen for nearly thirty years. Everyone looks toward the popular fellow many times a day. Whatever joy, anger, sorrow, or pleasure occurs around it, the hands move onward with an expressionless face. It will undoubtedly continue the same way. Truly cool. (Seattle)

Most of my photographs of people are snapshots made before the subject notices. Recently I have also begun making portraits after telling the person. Yet these are not true “portraits” carefully arranged for light, shadow, background, and optimal settings; they are direct photographs made as things stand at that place and time. Since I am really snapshotting a portrait, I have decided to call them “portrait snaps.”
