The Wind from Seattle Vol. 33

The Wind from Seattle Vol. 33

Walking the back streets, one sees traces of the city as it first developed, old appearances preserved as though resisting the passage of time. The clean, colorful beauty of the present is absent, but a weighty atmosphere remains, built up and hardened across the years.

Residents of this area, like this singer-songwriter, choose to preserve a world apart from the main streets. Without taking material wealth as their goal, they seem to enjoy a happy life on their own terms.

I am pleased that the interiors of old buildings also preserve the values and culture of their period and, just as one hopes, continue to assert an atmosphere clearly distinct from the present.

People with a mysterious charm, as though they had come from an earlier age, live here. Or is that merely an illusion created by the surroundings?

Above a lowered passage to the harbor stands one of America's oldest markets, more than a century old and still contributing greatly to citizens' lives. During the late nineteenth-century Alaska gold rush, 100,000 people reportedly sailed from Seattle seeking sudden fortunes. These stone pavements must have overflowed with them. Passing here, I seem to hear the excited and anxious murmur of miners staking their futures on dreams and setting out for adventure.

Inside the buildings facing this back street, galleries, restaurants, seafood and produce sellers, florists, and many other shops stand in a disorderly maze. A small French restaurant deep within is a favorite. I visit several times a month but discover a new flavor each time and never tire of it.

French restaurants often imitate rococo style, projecting an elegant luxury that makes casual entry slightly intimidating. This is instead an ordinary place, like a dining room in a country town. During the meal, unwanted umbrellas and coats can simply hang from hooks beside the door.

Diners exchange small nods and smiles like old acquaintances even when they do not know one another. Watching them, I find that without noticing I too have become part of the atmosphere.

Lunch offers nearly the same menu as dinner but in smaller portions, though still ample. Sunlight from the inlet reflects from antique furniture and casts light through the room. Together with food equal to that of famous restaurants, it brings a moment of peace.

Emerging onto the main street, the broad space and leafless trees first look bleak. Yet the cheerful expressions of a young couple make the street shine even on a cloudy day. I return to reality with a start, my steps lightened by a strangely relieved satisfaction.

When I smile, the other person returns it. The main street is not so bad after all. He said, “I am No. 1!” I do not know what he meant, but I hope that spirit carries him happily through life.

彼は言ったね、「 I am No.1 !

Thank you. My small feet may look frail, but for seventy-two years they have accompanied me proudly without major failure. They are heroes who serve modestly without boasting of the achievement.

Lying on the sofa, I wondered stylishly what resolution I should make in my zodiac year, an uncharacteristic thought for someone who has lived by improvisation. Predictably I dozed off. When I woke, my feet entered my vision with a shock. What a failure! How could I have forgotten all my life to thank such important companions? Thank you sincerely for everything. Please take care of me this year too.
