It is exhilarating beneath a blue sky. Fortunately, even when the temperature is high, humidity is low. With a little wind and a hat or parasol, one can stay all day without heatstroke; sunburn is the main concern. Whenever farm equipment stands in such a setting I want to photograph it, probably because I love landscapes that reveal human life within nature.
A tavern in a farming town resembles the saloon of a Western. Old Western-style bars were apparently called saloons; today “tavern” is more common. This one opened in 1890, so cowboys must once have dusted themselves off, shoved through swinging doors, and downed bourbon from large shot glasses at the counter. A yellowed photograph from 1910 hung on the wall and showed a place nearly identical to the present one, with the same moose head looking down over the bar. For more than a century it has watched the patterns of human life.
Taverns are everywhere, but farther north is the one Grandpa Charlie frequented when young; today's owner is like a grandson to him. It is a twenty-minute drive from his home, and he eagerly waits for someone to take him. He settles into his customary seat, eats fish and chips and pickled herring with beer or coffee, and will not move for ages. The hand holding his cup is rough, large, and strong as a baseball glove, a work of art shaped by a hard life crossing nature as logger, fisherman, and farmer. Seeing him so comfortable, I cannot suggest leaving and remain with him. I listen with the same excitement to adventures he has told so often that I know them by heart.
Seattle is said to place city beside nature. Indeed, after driving about one hundred kilometers, one finds patches of deep forest that seem scarcely touched by people. Here stood a large beaver lodge, a cone more than a meter high made from suitably sized branches gnawed and stacked. Listening closely, I imagined rustling and splashing. Not wishing to disturb the life of a monogamous pair and their children, I left quickly.
Cattle gather by twos and threes around sunset. From here they will be taken to the barn and sleep. However hot the day, at this hour a cool, fresh breeze passes gently across the plain, making me feel that body and spirit are being cleansed.
Henri Cartier-Bresson is said to have favored geometric composition. I love his work: from a little distance, with a broad view, he reportedly used a 50mm lens most often, he shaped light, shadow, and objects into visual art, then introduced people to create a sense of life. I did not consciously compose this photograph in his manner, but the thought came to me as I aimed the camera.
Recently I have made more close, confrontational snapshots in the manner of Ihei Kimura. The thrill is appealing. For snapshots of people I mainly use wide-angle lenses, seeking deep depth of field and greater freedom at the decisive moment. I sometimes crop a little, but with a 28mm lens I should also make portraits that express its naturally broad angle of view.
What a stylish woman. The playful combination of shoes and socks especially caught my eye, and I considered photographing only her feet. Perhaps she had stopped to rest on the hill. Sunglasses hid her expression, but the large cloth bag and key hanging from a blue cord around her neck created an intriguing mystery.
He stood out beneath midday light falling like a spotlight. His hat was highly individual: a hunting cap worn backward with excellent classic goggles and, as the crowning touch, what may have been a pheasant tail. He was looking down, so I boldly approached and photographed through the viewfinder. The instant I released the shutter, he raised his face. A camera directly before him must have been startling, but I was startled too and hurriedly waved hello.
When I encounter a scene like this, the camera turns toward it almost unconsciously. I also wanted the reflection in the window but missed the timing. Had I noticed a few seconds sooner, it would have worked.
An interesting wall, probably painted freely. I instantly wanted a composition with Lion Man standing atop the head of the passing woman, but my camera angle was too level and I failed to match the shutter timing. I need to act faster.
I understand that you are angry, but men are weak when attacked in public. After more than a minute of scolding, a man wants to run. He wants to say he is sorry, but cannot do it immediately. Stay quiet for five minutes and he will kiss your cheek. That is a man.
Nothing unusual: merely two women sitting. Yet I like this photograph. The tones, their expressions, and the way light surrounds them are gentle. I think it was better without color. Moved by a scene that enters the heart softly from afar, I press the shutter gently with a sweet expression, feeling as though I stood on cotton candy.
I attached a filter that blocks visible light and passes only infrared, and tried infrared photography with the M8. Of the filters I ordered, the IR850 arrived first. As a rule, blue skies appear dark and green leaves pale. Deciduous trees are white here, while evergreens are black. The weather was poor and the sky heavily clouded, so the infrared effect may not be strong overall. The foreground land is dark, while a large rain puddle appears white from reflected clouds.
Focus for visible and infrared light apparently falls in different places. I have heard that infrared work is easier to focus with a small aperture and deep depth of field, though the resulting slow shutter speeds make a tripod essential. Artistic infrared photographs made with various techniques offer unusual and fascinating renderings. Since I own an M8, I want to learn and experiment further.
A Leica Akademie M Monochrom workshop will soon be held in Vancouver, Canada, three hours north of Seattle by car. I want to know more about monochrome photography, so I will attend. I will probably stuff my head with knowledge, become confused again, and lose my way. But in a few months I will likely forget what I learned anyway. I am going in hope that something will strike a chord.
