The Wind from Seattle Vol. 23

The Wind from Seattle Vol. 23

My seventy-first new year has arrived. Because New Year's Day is my birthday, congratulations are particularly appropriate. Yet I have heard there were no maternal-and-child health handbooks then, and parents had some discretion to alter the date when registering a birth, so I sometimes wonder whether my birthday was actually another day. The zodiac animal for 1942 was the horse, though in the feng-shui calendar the year apparently continues until the following Setsubun. In any case, considering the time in my mother's womb, I would really be a snake even if the date shifted. If my sign is the snake, my traits are curiosity and passion; with the horse involved, cheerfulness and a taste for display are added. So this year and next I will make practicing those four qualities together my goal.

By nature, I believe my interests shift easily. It is true of work and hobbies alike: once I begin to see something vaguely unenjoyable beneath the surface, continuing becomes burdensome. When I feel I have reached the limit of my talent or ability, or lose heart because the endpoint I might reach no longer seems attractive, I apparently begin, without realizing it, to raise an antenna in search of the next thing.

Photography, however, has lasted surprisingly long as a pleasurable hobby. I began approaching a camera as more than a tool for recording my surroundings about twenty-seven years ago, when I bought a used Nikon F2 Photomic A with 28mm and 105mm lenses. Later I inherited my uncle's Leica M5 with a 35mm Summicron and 50mm Summilux. From then on, I became absorbed in the pleasure of seeing the image within the frame merge with what I had felt while standing before the subject.

Making a photograph that expresses what I felt at the scene is truly difficult. Perhaps I have not lost interest because the road in pursuit of that one frame extends far ahead, with the thrill of not knowing what the goal may be. Compared with the past, the proportion of photographs I want to keep has become extremely small. I do not know whether slower reflexes make me miss good moments, my tastes have changed, or my standards have risen. Still, I enjoy where I am and retain the desire to improve.

My subjects may be suburban nature, city streets, buildings, people, or anything else, but the condition I impose on my photography can be expressed in one word: intuition. When a scene feels sweetly compelling, I turn the camera toward it without hesitation, wanting to condense that world into a small frame. A chance encounter with such a moment inspires me most of all.

In the morning I wake with a vague mind, glimpse the brightened window through a fold in the curtain, recognize where I am, and begin the day with a relieved breath. At night, still vague, I place my glasses on the table while noticing traces of a cobweb on the bedroom ceiling, then close my eyes. Across the long interval, I spend my time seeing. Most of the time the brain unconsciously directs the gaze. When photography begins, however, the eyes recognize an emergency and sharpen their sensory function. They must deliberately slip sensual awareness into ordinary life and nature, play with imagination, and tear off fragments of character and beauty. These rarely occupy the whole field of vision, but exist in a small part. Unless the sensor in the heart works well with the eyes, they are overlooked.

Even many famous professional photographs would probably become dry and uninteresting if the information outside the print's borders were included. This is photography's special charm. Only by choosing how to frame a scene does the subject become clear, the story deepen, and an effective melody like film music enter to complete the arrangement.

Even when I strain to attend to the entire landscape flowing before my eyes, determined to scoop out one frame carrying emotional meaning, such a scene rarely appears. And even a fine encounter must be followed by pointing the camera and matching the shutter to the instant. It is precisely because the road of snapshot photography is so difficult that it is worth challenging.

I am now in my twenty-fifth year of living in America, yet I retain a deep nostalgia for the life and culture of Japan. The traveler's heart of a foreigner has never left me. Perhaps it heightens my sensitivity when I photograph here, filling my heart with lyrical feeling at whatever I see. Even when I make no good picture, I am truly happy that carrying a camera lets me enjoy the world my eyes place within a frame.

This year too, I hope to remain on good terms with life and pass the year in an elegant frame of mind.
