The Wind from Seattle Vol. 20

The Wind from Seattle Vol. 20

Washington is nicknamed the Evergreen State for its forests of evergreen conifers such as western hemlock, western red cedar, and fir. Now, sparkling autumn leaves have appeared within that green world, revealing the season's mysterious transformation and moving me. Because Seattle is surrounded by bays and lakes, viewing autumn naturally comes paired with waterscapes.

Speaking of water, Seattle is famous for rain and sometimes called the Rain City, though its actual precipitation is not so great. What falls is generally light rain or drizzle, while cloudy days continue from November through April. Within the Northwest's distinctively subdued, quiet environment, autumn dress produces a brilliantly luminous effect.

As the rainy season approaches, cloudy days have already become more frequent. In the vaguely moist air beneath thin, widespread clouds, leaves beginning to take on autumn colors seem to compete in giving off light. I remember something an American friend once said. To her, the first hint of autumn felt freshest of all the seasons and suggested a “beginning.” Autumn leaves were an energetic breath preparing to pass life to the next generation, with spring's new green as their goal.

Mist in the distance made the landscape look as though it were proclaiming autumn's arrival through a special performance. Although the leaves are dying, the force of this instant is tremendous. I thought of a sparkler, yet the scene lacks the simple pathos of something merely disappearing. Is that because one feels the strength of a mission to pass life onward? My friend's words return to me.

Not to be outdone by the trees, grasses hurry to display autumn splendor. Ah, how beautiful are the colors drawn by nature. Seeing this season's colors change before my eyes makes me realize that they unquestionably multiply the joy of being alive.

Light and atmosphere can create the illusion of entering another world. Surrounded by these autumn colors, I feel I am in a yellow country where even the air has been dyed. My white polo shirt actually looked yellow here. No, it was freshly washed; it was not yellow from dirt.

I met a couple walking beside the lake. They seemed older than I, and said they were training for winter trekking. Old age is often compared with something withered, meaning an end, but withered does not necessarily mean weak. Their calm air fit beautifully within the autumn surroundings. Grandfather, grandmother, keep going!

I seem to have been born fond of peering through gaps, and many of my photographs use such compositions. Sometimes I wonder what work my ancestors did. Perhaps they were hunters, leaving me the habit of approaching prey quietly while watching through branches. I would hate to discover they were habitual voyeurs driven by sexual curiosity. No, landscapes seen through gaps in autumn leaves simply make fine pictures.

At this season I see many women walking beside the lake. Why are so many alone? Do they want to leave reality briefly and enjoy a romantic atmosphere? Are they healing the sorrow of parting from a lover? No, coming here might make them lonelier still. In any event, spending time alone within autumn's quiet nature may cleanse the heart. These days, I too often come to the lake in that mood.

A patch of clear sky appeared, so I took a lunch box to the boathouses across Lake Washington and spent my lunch break there. For someone like me, who dislikes hurried meals, it is an ideal peaceful place. The deep blue reflected on the water is lovely, the sunlight soft, and the temperature comfortable. Watching the occasional boat pass in a daze and hoping no call from the office summons me back, I can stretch my heart during a moment of rest.

I cannot see beyond the thicket, but the path looks as though it continues forever, and I wonder what lies ahead. In fact I have visited this lakeshore many times and know its geography well, yet every time I feel the same. A bridge, a path, brush beyond it lightly colored by autumn, and clouds floating into a blue sky. It is already the beginning of a favorite story.

Platforms about the size of three tatami mats stand here and there beside the paths around this lake. They are perfect spots for a picnic while viewing autumn. Surprisingly few people come to this area, and one can pass the time slowly without interruption.

This autumn lakeshore makes me want to fly like a bird and circle above it. The landscapes around Lakes Washington and Sammamish, some already in autumn color, others still green, display fascinating patterns. I look forward to the changes through winter. Perhaps I should take a longer trip while autumn remains.
