The Art of War was written some 2,500 years ago by Sun Wu, a general of China's Spring and Autumn period. Comprising thirteen chapters, it appears to be widely applied even to modern business strategy. “Know the enemy and know yourself, and in a hundred battles you will never be in peril...” is a famous line in Japan, while “Wind, Forest, Fire and Mountain,” drawn from the chapter on military contention, is equally well known. The first chapter sets out fundamental principles of preparedness in five matters: the Way, Heaven, Earth, the Commander, and Method. Though these explain the foundations of military strategy for actual warfare, setting the five beside the practice of photography reveals that they contain, in remarkably concentrated and profound form, the innermost secrets of the photographic art.
The “king, leader, or commander” is the photographer. “The people, soldiers, and weapons” correspond to cameras, lenses, filters, tripods, and other equipment. The subject is “the battleground and opponent,” while the act of photographing is “combat.” And through “victory,” an excellent photographic work becomes possible.
I. The Way: It causes the people to share their ruler's purpose, so that they will live and die with him without fear of danger.
You must know the camera you use, love it, and make it part of yourself. To handle a camera intuitively, keep it close at all times and build a relationship of mutual understanding and trust. This requires sharing extensive combat experience, photography, under many conditions. The camera will then respond of its own accord, and you can establish a personal style capable of making the best photograph whatever circumstances the subject presents.
II. Heaven: Darkness and light, cold and heat, and the seasons of time.
Cultivate the sensitivity to adapt to the seasons, weather, and time of day, and to know and enjoy the character of each. Read the tonal curve, color, and impression of detail that light and shadow create upon the subject. Let your spirit rise each time, and frame the motif of emotion awakened within you. If your mood cannot harmonize with the surroundings that day, do not press the shutter, for without harmony between your heart and the world around you, an expressive photograph cannot be made. At times, one should also discern whether color will best describe the subject, or whether black and white will give fuller form to one's feeling, choosing the light accordingly.
III. Earth: Distance and proximity, danger and ease, broad and narrow ground, death and life.
Whether in a city, mountain, or field, remain attentive to your surroundings. Move with constant awareness of your position and the direction of light, continually composing visual information in your mind within the kind of pictorial frame you prefer. Then, even when an interesting encounter suddenly appears, you can photograph it with the best expression without becoming flustered. Depending on conditions, set distance, aperture, and shutter speed beforehand. Readiness to release the shutter quickly increases the chance of catching the moment. If your destination is planned, research photographic vantage points in advance so you can work efficiently. At times, waiting for the desired instant may be the right method.
IV. The Commander: Wisdom, trust, benevolence, courage, and discipline.
Hold firm convictions about photography, face the subject openly and boldly, and make the camera obey. If everything is left to a camera in full automatic mode, your response to the subject cannot appear in the image. Only by understanding the capabilities and character of camera and lens, then adjusting and operating them according to your intention, can you make a good photograph. When carrying several cameras or lenses, calmly judge which equipment fits the situation and adapt as needed. Camera and equipment should always be handled beautifully and smoothly, like extensions of your limbs. Whether you can guide them to results beyond their nominal abilities depends on your sensitivity and skill.
V. Method: Organization, chains of command, and the management of resources.
It is essential to know thoroughly how to use camera, lens, and accessories. That requires studying photographic theory and the specifications and performance of each piece of equipment. The combinations of settings for different subjects and conditions are infinite. Yet once you know the basic principles, even when you depart from the rules you can control how a scene is rendered and what it expresses. With changes in light, even a familiar landscape can yield many distinctive variations.
Those who understand these five matters will prevail; those who do not will not.
I wondered whether using a military treatise from before the Common Era to study photography was a little too eccentric. Yet the correspondences were so striking that the idea kept expanding and became tremendous fun. Then I even began to think that all things in heaven and earth might ultimately return to a single truth, which is, once again, taking the thought rather too far.
Outside, the season has arrived when early cherry blossoms can be seen here and there. The rainy season will soon be over.
