Seattle is known as the home of companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, Starbucks, and Tully's, but few people know that Washington leads the United States in the production of many agricultural products. These include red raspberries, beans, hops, spearmint oil, apples, cherries, pears, and peppermint oil; it also produces large quantities of grapes, onions, wheat, corn, potatoes, and carrots. Seventy percent of the hops exported from here go to Japan, so many of the beers drunk in Japan may use Washington hops. Beyond the suburbs, one can see this state's vast farmland spread across an area half the size of Japan.

シアトルはMicrosoft、Amazon、Costco、StarbucksやTully’sなどの本社があることで知られているが、ワシントン州は生産が全米一の農産物が数多くあることを知る人は少ない。赤ラズベリー、豆類、ホップ、スペアミント油、リンゴ、チェリー、西洋なし、ペパーミント油などだが、その他ぶどう、たまねぎ、小麦、トウモロコシ、ジャガイモやニンジンも多く生産されている。そして輸出されるホップの70%は日本へ行くというから、日本で飲まれるビールの多くがここのホップが使われているのかもしれない。郊外へ出ると日本の国土の半分の面積があるこの州の広大な農耕地を見ることができる。

A little over 100 kilometers north is an area called the Skagit Valley, the world's second-largest producer of tulips. Mountains enclose it to the east and the sea to the west, while the Skagit River winds through its center. The river's frequent floods are said to enrich the soil, an interpretation that seems characteristically American in its roughness, or rather its boldness. Every spring, the valley is carpeted with colorful tulips, daffodils, peonies, irises, lilies, and other flowers.

100km余り北に世界第2位のチューリップ生産地であるスカジットバレーと呼ばれる地域がある。東を山に西を海に囲まれ、真ん中をくねくねとスカジット川が流れている。この川の頻繁に起こる洪水が土地を肥沃な土壌にしているとも言われるが、いかにもアメリカらしい荒っぽい、いや豪快な解釈だ。毎年春になれば色とりどりのチューリップやラッパ水仙、ボタン、シャクヤク、アヤメ、ユリなどの絨毯に覆われることになる。

At the end of this month comes the annual Halloween celebration. People display jack-o'-lanterns, and costumed children visit neighboring houses chanting “Trick or treat” and receiving candy. I hear that children with the best collecting results secure enough for an entire year. Well then, first form the ranks, and onward to the pumpkin hunt!

今月末は恒例のハロウィーンだ。カボチャ提灯を飾り、仮装した子供達は「トリック・オア・トリート」と唱えながら近所の家々を回ってお菓子をもらう。集菓成績のいい子は一年分をゲットするのだそうだ。さ～て、先ずは隊列を組んでカボチャ狩りに、いざ出陣！

At this time of year the harvest is over, and perhaps the season for the next sowing and planting is approaching. Here and there, ridges run in straight north-south lines, forming fields of remarkable beauty. Some plots are square and others circular. Seen from the air, these flat, expansive farmlands, once great grasslands, may resemble the geometric figures of the Nazca Lines.

今の時期は収穫が終わって、次の種蒔きや作付けの時期を向かえているのだろうか、あちこちで畝が南北に向かって直線状に立ち、とてもきれいな姿の畑を見ることが出来る。仕切りが四角だったり丸だったり、元々大草原だった平たく広がる耕地を空から見ると、ナスカの地上絵のように幾何学的な図形ではないだろうか。

Because American farms cover such enormous areas, the risks of failure must also be high. Depending on the crop, weather can drastically affect the harvest. I hear that many people ultimately become unable to make a living, abandon their barns and equipment, and leave in search of work elsewhere. Seeing ruins like these brings to mind the old line: “the summer grasses, all that remains of warriors' dreams.”

アメリカでは畑の面積が広いだけに農業は失敗のリスクも高いのだろう。作物によっては天候で収穫が大きく左右され、結局生活が成り立たなくなり、納屋も機材も放置して他の土地へ仕事を求めて去る人達も多いと聞く。このような廃屋を見ると「兵どもが夢の跡」の感あり。

Corn is another of this state's major crops. It would ordinarily have been harvested in summer, so this field must be part of a double-cropping system. The kernels are food for people, while the highly nutritious stalks and leaves are widely used along with the kernels as feed for cattle and other livestock. Cornstarch is also used in industrial products. Extracted corn oil becomes cooking oil, and even the styles of the female flowers are apparently used as herbal medicine. In recent years, bioethanol made from corn has drawn attention for many uses amid concern about environmental problems. Every other part has its use as well; corn is a resource of great importance to human life.

トウモロコシもこの州の主要な農産物の一つである。通常は夏に収穫されるはずだから、きっとこの畑は二期作栽培のものなのだろう。トウモロコシの実は人間の食用であったり、茎も葉も栄養価が高いので実と共に牛などの飼料として大いに利用されている。デンプンは工業製品の材料にもなっている。抽出したコーン油はサラダ油などにも用いられるし、まためしべの花柱は生薬として使われることもあるそうだ。そして近年トウモロコシを原料として生産されるバイオエタノールは環境問題への関心からいろいろな用途に注目されている。その他すべての部位がそれぞれ利用されていて、人間の暮らしにとても大切な資源なのだ。

What family might once have lived here? Since the house is small, it may have been no more than a work shed, while the building beside it was perhaps a stable for farm animals. While their parents worked in the fields, did children run around this open space, full of energy and delight? In spring, the pleasant rustle of poplar leaves in the fresh breeze must have sounded here; in summer storms, the roar of bending branches may have frightened them. I raise the camera and close my eyes, and those sounds and scenes rise before me.

ここにはどんな家族が暮らしていたのだろうか。小さい家なので単なる作業小屋だったのかもしれないが、隣は農耕用の家畜を飼う厩かなにかだろう。父母が畑で農作業をする間、この広場で子供達は元気よく走り回って楽しく遊んでいたのだろうか。春には爽やかな風でポプラの葉がさらさらと立てる音が心地よく響き、夏の嵐に枝がしなるごーっという音に怖い思いもしたのだろう。カメラを構え、目をつぶるとそんな音や光景が浮かんでくる。

With grasslands scattered across the state, livestock farming also thrives here. In spring and summer, cattle can be seen everywhere grazing at ease. At this time of year, the moist colors of a rain-soaked pasture have a fine, evocative beauty. From the misty distance, fine rain blows in on the wind.

草原が点在するこの州は牧畜も盛んだ。春夏はゆったりと草を食む牛をあちこちで見ることが出来る。今の時期、雨の牧場のしっとりとした色合いは情緒があっていい。霞んだ向こうから風と共に細かい雨が吹き付けてくる。

Wherever I go, my camera and this car always go with me. They are indispensable companions and my essential means of reaching mountains, sea, and city alike. My driving is a little rough, so the body has dents and scratches here and there, but the engine remains in excellent condition. If I spot an interesting subject, I may brake suddenly, force an awkward U-turn, or even push through a narrow lane while branches projecting from both sides scrape noisily along the car. It has traveled more than 100,000 kilometers and, remarkably, continues to endure without trouble. So I told it I would take its portrait as a reward, and it smiled and struck an elegant pose. It certainly knows its way around a camera.

どこへ行くにも必ず一緒なのはカメラとこの車。山も海も街へも共に行動するなくてはならない大切な足だ。運転が少々雑なのでボディはあちこちに凹みやキズができているが、エンジンは至って快調だ。気になる被写体を見つければ急ブレーキで止まったり無理なＵターンをしたり、時には狭い小道で左右から張り出す枝をがりがりこすりながら強引に抜けたりもする。走行距離はもう10万キロ超えているが、まあ問題なくよく耐えてくれているもんだ。ということでご褒美に撮って上げるよと言ったら、気どった態度でニコッとポーズをとりよった。さすがカメラ慣れしちょるわい。
