The Wind from Seattle Vol. 06

In photography, a “snapshot” means capturing a subject such as a person in a natural state, in an instant. It is usually contrasted with a “portrait,” for which the subject is told beforehand and the photograph is taken with care. Recently in Japan, what is called the street snap has become popular: with permission, ordinary people walking through town are photographed in the latest fashions and the pictures appear in magazines. This kind of “snap” is probably closer to portraiture. Another term resembling snapshot is “candid photo,” but that carries the stronger sense of photographing someone without being noticed. Rendered freely in Japanese, it becomes something like “secret photography” or “stolen photography.” That may be accurate, since the picture is taken without the subject's knowledge, but I dislike those Japanese expressions because they sound antisocial. Perhaps “ninja photography” or “confidential photography”... No, those are rather clumsy too, so perhaps “snapshot” is best after all. I often shoot with the camera hanging vertically from my right hand, from my side, or with a monopod. I like working without the viewfinder, capturing a person's expression, movement, or atmosphere before they notice. Such an unposed figure seems to me more appealing and beautiful, with the inner self honestly revealed. When there is enough time to capture someone as they are, I also look through the viewfinder, focus precisely, and take the photograph.

Street photography where people gather is a joy. I want to make photographs of the many scenes of human life: someone walking in silence, someone waiting, people talking with friends, or taking a brief smoke between tasks. I like to watch and photograph fragments of that human flow as I walk. From natural scenes, I hope to create pictures that carry the familiar scent of everyday life.

A woman happens to pass a dog waiting patiently on a street corner for its owner. “What a good dog. Aren't you clever? Aren't you thirsty?” she says with obvious affection. Two strangers exchange a gentle feeling, and the sight is so heartwarming that I am delighted to turn my camera toward them. Even when I cannot take a photograph, I love witnessing a tender space like this.

Might conversation between a shop clerk and a customer enrich both their lives beyond the simple exchange of buying and selling? In any situation, trading even a single word with a stranger creates a sense of connection and a warm atmosphere. Making the effort to do so is one way of making each day more enjoyable. When I photograph a moment like that, I imagine there is a smile on my own lips as well.

The poster on the wall was interesting, and at the very moment I raised the camera I noticed people running down the stairs beside it, but I pressed the shutter anyway. Startled, they called “Sorry, sorry” and went on their way. It is an ordinary enough scene, but an instant that rarely offers the chance to remain as a photograph, so I am very fond of it.

In this city one often sees both men and women with tattoos, and those who see them feel no particular resistance. Bank employees, schoolteachers, and police officers may openly display tattoos, an unthinkable cultural difference in Japan. They may embody wishes, serve as fashion, or have any number of other reasons behind them, but many people show their tattoos. It is enjoyable to see the interesting designs in which their feelings have been invested.

Women often choose floral designs on visible places such as the neck, shoulders, arms, and ankles. Men naturally have fewer flowers; one often sees dragons or mysterious patterns like those worn by characters in fantasy stories. Chinese characters appear popular with both men and women, though I sometimes see expressions such as “lost in a fog” or “beast” that make me wonder whether the wearer understands their meaning. The characters for “love” and “good fortune” are common among women.

What impressed me here was how perfectly the tattoo on the back of her right hand matched the design of her clothes. There was a similar pattern on her left arm, and it struck me that tattoos have recently become part of a complete fashion ensemble. In fact, I am currently tempted to have patterns like these applied from both cheeks down my neck. I would disappear for a week or so, then see the dramatic effect when I reappeared before everyone.

I am especially drawn to photographing a woman with a melancholy expression. It suggests a drama, not a simple love story, but something more complex, with many layers and a touch of mystery. She stands at the center of its whirlpool as one development follows another. Just when everything seems about to collapse, she rises again like a phoenix at the very brink. I want the suspense, and then, of course, a happy ending that lets us breathe easily. Ah, perhaps that is rather ordinary.

With a scene like this, I take particular care not to intrude. A voice inside says that if so, I should leave them alone and never point a camera at them. Yet my desire to preserve such a scene as a photograph is strong. I take a few frames in another direction, confirm the best aperture and shutter speed, then capture it quickly in a single shot without being noticed. In the languid air just before the sun at the left of the frame disappears, the family passes the time together without doing anything in particular. Merely watching them makes me feel peaceful, and I want to keep such a moment.
