Fragments of a Stranger

Mr. Scott’s Leica history begins from the Leica M5 that he transferred as a memento of his wife’s uncle. The rugged body whose edges shine in a dull color attracted him. And, its precision, feel, and weight overlapped his Walther in the picture. I see. It’s very Scott. Even though I don’t know much about guns, I still can understand why he feels so. There must be many people who were fascinated by Leica’s appearance, feel, and precision.

He used to shoot films, but as the photo laboratories closed down one by one, he started using the EPSON R-D1s. When he once visited Japan, he asked me how I like the Leica M9. I forcibly passed my Leica M8 to him so that he can try it as much as he wants, saying “If you don’t stick to the full-frame sensor, you’ll like the M8 for sure.” Later, he acquired his own M8 and he has been using it since then. He says he likes the resolution of lowpass-less sensor and the quiet color reproduction that is unique to Leica.

Scottさんのライカ歴は、奥様の叔父様の遺品としてブラッククロームのライカＭ5を譲り受けたことから始まる。少し無骨で、何より使い込まれてエッジが鈍色に光るボディにひかれたそうだ。そして、ライカが持つ精密さ、手触り、重みと、写真のワルサーと重なったそうだ。なるほど、いかにもScottさんらしい。銃に慣れ親しんでいない私がその理由を聞いても、なんとなく納得できてしまう。ライカのあの出で立ち、手触り、精密感。手にした瞬間にやられてしまった人はたくさんいるだろう。

元々フイルムで撮影していたそうだが、時代の流れで徐々に現像所が一つ、また一つと閉じていき、EPSON R-D1sを使うように。Scottさんが来日された際に「ライカM9はどうですか？」と尋ねられた。私は、「フルサイズに拘る必要がなければ、M8はかなりいいですよ」と、私のM8を好きなだけ使ってみてくださいと無理矢理手渡した。後日、ScottさんはM8を手に入れられて、現在に至る。ローパスレスのレゾリューション、ライカ独特の渋い色再現が気に入られたそうだ。

Mr. Scott is a true street shooter. He likes Leica because it has necessary and sufficient function for shooting in a compact system. He mostly uses the M8 on a monopod (that is connected via the quick release shoe) and shoots without looking into the viewfinder in order to take candid photos. Of course, this helps to reduce camera shake. He uses the quick release shoe so he instantly can switch to vertical position whenever it’s necessary. He has tried many monopods and he encountered his favorite Manfrotto’s model which extends by squeezing the trigger handle and locks in position by releasing the handle.

Scottさんは生粋のスナップシューターである。ライカは撮影に必要最小限かつ十分な機能が盛り込まれ、非常にコンパクトなカメラシステムであるところが気に入ってるそうだ。ストリートが主戦場で、人々を自然な雰囲気でフレームするために、1脚にクイックシューをつけたM8を載せ、ノーファインダーで撮ることが多い。もちろん、通常の撮影の際に、手ぶれを抑制するためにも役立つ。クイックシューを利用する理由は、縦位置でフレームする際にさっと移行できるように。1脚は色々なものを試してマンフロット社製のものに落ち着いたそうだ。この1脚は、脚を一気に伸ばせて、さらに伸ばしたと同時にロックがかかるのが美点。Scottさん一押しの1脚である。
