Fragments of a Stranger

“Why don’t we talk about someone who loves rangefinders and photography? We don’t only talk about his/her cameras and lenses, but also focus on their attitudes and approaches toward photography,” said our chief editor. I wondered if I know someone who takes great photography showing his/her personality and philosophy. I do know many mischievous people who make excuses for buying or wanting a lens over a glass of hoppy, but I only know one gentleman for this new series. So, I e-mailed him and humbly asked if I can talk about him. And, he humbly said he would be happy to help us.

His name is Mr. Scott Tsumura and he lives in the United States. He went to the States after he turned 45 years old. Now, he’s an executive producer of a game development and consulting company and lives in Bellevue near Seattle. The name “Scott” is a sort of his real name that is written on his passport and I’ll talk about it later.

レンジファインダーな人達」と銘打ち、レンジファインダーカメラを愛し、写真を愛する皆さんを紹介しようという企画が持ち上がった。編集長曰く、「カメラやレンズの話だけでなく、レンジファインダーカメラを愛する人の、その人となりや、写真に対してのスタンスそしてアプローチなど、もう少し濃い記事を」とのこと。果たしてまわりに記事に相応しい人物が居るのか。唸らされる写真、人柄、哲学。レンズとホッピー握って、物欲と買ってしまったことに対する言い訳を小1時間並べ立てるお茶目な人はたくさん居るものの、困った、まるで思いつかない。1人だけ心当たりがあるのはあるのだが・・・と、恐る恐るメールを1通。「私なんかが役に立つのであれば」とご快諾をいただき、このたび編集員Kが皆様に素敵なレンジファインダーの使い手をお一人ご紹介したいと思います。今回ご紹介するのは米国在住のScott Tsumuraさん。お仕事の関係で40歳半ば過ぎてから渡米され、現在に至ります。現在はゲーム開発及びコンサルタント会社のエグゼクティブプロデューサーとしてご活躍中であり、シアトル近郊のベルビューという街にお住まいである。「Scott」というお名前は、お持ちである米国のパスポートにも記載された、ある種の本名である。・・・このあたりのお話しは後ほど。

I first came to know Scott while looking for sample photographs made with the well-known, or perhaps notorious, Thambar 9cm f/2.2. That search led me to his blog, where he had posted many wonderful images. The lens is full of peculiarities and seems likely to overpower anyone who uses it. Scott, however, made skillful use of those traits. His Thambar photographs were quiet and dreamlike, yet they also revealed the photographer's sure and warm gaze, as though they depicted a medieval world. I began visiting the blog every day, wondering what kind of person could have made them. Scott came to Japan several times a year, and before long we met whenever he visited. Although I was young enough to be his son, I did most of the talking each time while he listened with a pleasant smile and an encouraging “yes, yes.” Thinking back, however, we never once went out to photograph together, and each meeting amounted to only an hour or two of conversation. I had never asked him for details, but even the fragments I heard suggested an extraordinarily varied career. Convinced there must be fascinating stories behind it, I invited myself to his home in the United States. For the first time, we sat down and spoke at length. His character was clearly present in his photographs. Above all, I wanted to introduce him to you.

そもそもScottさんと知り合ったきっかけは、皆さんもよくご存じの銘玉（迷玉？）のThambar9cm f2.2というレンズの作例を探していて、その際に素晴らしいカットを多数掲載されていたScottさんのblogに出会ったことである。レンズそのものがクセの塊のようなもので、なんとなくそれに振り回されそうなもの。しかしScottさんのThambarで撮られたカットは、そのクセを上手く活かされて、静かで幻想的、そして撮り手の確かで温かい目線を感じさせる、まるで中世の世界を描くかのようなものだった。「一体どんな人が撮ってるんだろう？」と、毎日blogを眺めるように。年に数回日本に来られる機会があり、いつしかその度にお会いするようになった。親子ほどに年の離れた私が、毎度一方的に話しに話し、Scottさんは毎度嫌な顔一つされず、にこやかに「うんうん」と。しかし考えてみれば、1度も写真の撮り歩きなどをご一緒させていただいたこともないし、毎度1-2時間程度お話しする程度だった。詳しくはお聞きしたことがないが、聞きかじるだけでも、それはそれは色々な経歴をお持ちである。これは相当面白いお話が聞けるのではないかと、米国のご自宅まで押しかけた次第である。はじめて腰を据えて色々なお話を伺ったのだが、なるほど写真にScottさんの人となりが。ともかく皆様にご紹介したいのです。
